http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/ohio-news/is-ohio-replacing-food-stamp-cards-being-sold-or-traded-for-drugs--1189796.html

Over 500,000 Ohio Food Stamp cards lost, stolen, sold , or exchanged for drugs over the last 2 years . How about that ? I recall a food stamp discussion a few months ago on this forum where we the skeptics were called "mean spirited" and "hateful" by likes of Operation Purple and those of her ilk . What say ye now ? I'll give Dayton Daily News the credit . They've obviously seen the light .

Have you ever seen someone parked in the fire lane outside of the store obviously waiting for someone, and maybe just maybe this person looks like a drug dealer? Chances are they sent someone in the store to either steal or pay for with welfare card, steaks and the like to trade for drugs. I think I have said this before and people on here thought I was nuts. But keep your eyes open and you will see it for yourself.

So whats the solution, should we let the legitimate users starve. How many are actually lost or stolen, what percentage is 500,000 of total cards issued in the last 2 yrs. More information please.

Timothy Slusher said he pleaded guilty last month to a felony charge of illegal use of food stamp benefits after he sold his sister’s food stamp card to a clerk at a market in Trotwood.

Slusher, who knew his sister’s card PIN, said many people he knows receive food stamp assistance, and they all trade some of the benefits on their cards in exchange for cash.

“Everyone I know who gets food stamps sell some for extra cash because they ain’t got no work and they ain’t got no money,” he said. “It is quick and easy, and everybody is doing it.”

Slusher said he can barely walk down the street in his neighborhood without someone offering to sell him their card or someone else’s. Most sellers, he said, want cash to buy cigarettes, alcohol and gas, and they will trade their benefits to other people in the neighborhood or at small grocery stores in the area.

“Most people are hard up,” he said. “I didn’t think it was that big of a deal. ... So many people were doing it, and I was doing what I thought was OK.”

So read the DDN article .
How to handle the situation ? Easy .... if they loose their cards that's it . Pretty simple . The offending individual is then put on a short leash where they can only purchase approved staples from an approved source . Bet that solution would dramatically reduce the problem .

I am all with you on cutting out waste and fraud but I do not care if a truly disabled person in this country who is on assistance is skinny or fat. Without knowing all the facts it would not be good to judge.

But on the other hand...people on disability who are working on the side and are not truly disabled need to be weeded out of the system. But how to do it? Just like the government does a poor job in administering programs they will do a poor job in cutting back on programs and probably take off people who really need the assistance and leave many of the ones (good con artists) who need to be taken off.

We start by throwing the crooks out of office. And stop the mindset that it is ok to steal from the government. People need to start protecting the government money just like their own.....oh wait that is our money.

I agree I am a skinny poor person, based upon my income, yet based upon my honesty and integrety I am rich.

That is a wise thing Mike;

Proverbs 22:1 New Living Translation: Choose a good reputation over great riches, for being held in high esteem is better than having silver or gold.

BTW: There are some fat poor people as well with honesty and integrity.

30,000 college students kicked out of food aid program in Michigan
State's new eligibility rules to save $75M; more students got aid than thought
Paul Egan/ Detroit News Lansing Bureau
Lansing — Michigan has removed about 30,000 college students from its food stamp program — close to double the initial estimate — saving about $75 million a year, says Human Services Director Maura Corrigan.
Federal rules don't allow most college students to collect food stamps, but Michigan had created its own rules that made nearly all students eligible, said Brian Rooney, Corrigan's deputy director. As a result, the number of Michigan college students on this form of welfare made the state a national leader. For example, Michigan had 10 times the number of students on food stamps as either Illinois or California, Rooney said.
Cutting off the students is part of what Corrigan says is an effort to change the culture of the state's welfare department and slash tens of millions of dollars of waste, fraud and abuse.
"Maybe (students) could go get a part-time job — that's what I did," said Corrigan, a former justice of the Michigan Supreme Court who attended Detroit's Marygrove College and University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.
